COURSE SYLLABUS

Viruses and bacteria can cause considerable damage, at times leading to the deaths of patients in hospitals and nursing homes. The perfidious thing about them is that they cannot be seen. Their presence is only noticed when a patient shows symptoms of infection, which can be of varying degrees. This brings forward, amongst others, two areas of concern:

  • Infections, once they have occurred, can be difficult to treat and often prolong patients’ hospital-stays and amount to considerable additional costs. Our focus, therefore, must be on taking preventative measures that aim to stop or slow infections from developing or developing further.
  • Equally important, employees must protect themselves from pathogens as much as possible. When bringing our current global context forward, SARS-CoV-2 will be discussed, as well as tuberculosis and hepatitis.

To address these two areas of concern, this 25-hour course is specifically aimed at combating viruses and bacteria with which employees in healthcare professions are regularly confronted with.

This training therefore contributes to an increased understanding and knowledge of infectious diseases in hospitals and nursing homes, with a focus on safety and hygiene.

Recognize symptoms of an infection and possible complications, learn about the immune system, identify the most common bacteria and viruses, and the anti-infectives and antibiotics used to treat these.

Practice sterilization and learn about risk-management for healthcare workers, patients and infected healthcare workers, as well as different infection control measures.

From protective clothing to surgical disinfection, master adequate hygiene practices. Perform immunization, wound care, and other procedures correctly and hygienically.

Cover the most common infections, including: nosocomial infections in hospitals and nursing homescommon cold/ Influenza/ COVID19infectious bowel diseasehepatitisAIDStuberculosis.

Understand the mechanisms of action of antimicrobials and their resistance, learn susceptibility testing techniques and how to administer antimicrobial agents via different routes.
